Luxury Watch Spotlight: Audemars Piguet
Beverly Loan Company specializes in large collateral loans against luxury, high-end watches from reputable and desirable watchmakers. Audemars Piguet is easily one of the most luxurious and sought after watch brands in the world. The company was founded by two watchmakers in 1875, Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet who had a goal to craft and construct complex movements in beautiful watch cases. While the company was not an immediate success, it did eventually open a branch office in Geneva where it was decided that all movements and finished watches would be made in house – which contributed to their success as one of the finest watch companies in the world. In fact, Audemars Piguet is in good company with Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe as one of the “big three” Swiss watchmakers.
The movements in Audemars Piguet, or AP as its known, are used not only in their own luxury watches, but also high-end jewelers that want a quality movement but are not watchmakers themselves. Tiffany & Co., Bvlgari, Gubelin, and Cartier are a few of these companies.
Some of the notable successes of the company include being the first in the world to introduce the smallest minute repeater and a jumping second hand. The thinnest pocket watch ever was introduced in 1925, and in 1929 AP created the first skeleton watch – which is where the movement is viewable either from the front or the back of the watch.
Throughout the centuries, Audemars Piguet has created some unprecedented watches that have impressed the industry and watch enthusiasts alike. One of the most notable watches is the Royal Oak. The Royal Oak was designed by Gerald Genta in 1971 after AP asked him to design a luxury watch in stainless steel. The story goes that he designed the Royal Oak “jumbo” in one evening, and the result was a beautiful sporty watch with a thin case, octagonal bezel and a superb movement. The watch is still in production today and in 2012 AP introduced a newer version of this watch that is very close to the original model.
The Royal Oak also inspired a young designer named Emmanuel Gueit to introduce a new concept to the original design – this watch became known as the Royal Oak Offshore. This was more substantial watch that would be used by adventurers that needed a watch that could withstand the elements.
Audemar Piguet has many other notable achievements, and it’s easy to see why the world views this company with such high regard. AP watches have always been and will continue to demand high prices from collectors, auction houses and pawnshops alike. Beverly Loan Company not only makes large pawn loans on these watches, but also purchases and sells all models of Audemar Piguet. “The Royal Oak Offshore is easily one of the most asked about watches,” said Jordan Tabach-Bank, owner and CEO of Beverly Loan Company. “Clients are always looking to purchase a Royal Oak at a discounted price, and when we do find these in our inventory we can’t keep them for long.”
