Van Cleef and Arpels’ Iconic Motif – The Alhambra
The four leaf clover shape is a symbol representing luck, fortune, and health – and is the signature shape for luxury jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels. Inspired by the Quatrefoil, a medieval era architectural element, the motif was introduced in 1968 and the collection was named The Alhambra. Luxury California pawnshop, Beverly Loan Company, has seen Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry walk through its doors for over 7 decades. The Alhambra collection has been around for a much shorter time but made no less of an impact.
The Collection started as a yellow gold long necklace and has since broadened to include various colored stones and styles: Onyx, jade, chalcedony, malachite, turquoise, and coral to name a few. The white mother of pearl continues to be Van Cleef’s bestseller and a regular in Beverly Loan’s showcase.
While the Alhambra collection has always drawn attention from the rich and famous like Princess Grace of Monaco, it wasn’t until 2001 when celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Mariah Carey, and Sarah Jessica Parker started wearing the design that the public started taking notice. Much like the Birkin bag, the style is now synonymous with wealth and high-end fashion.
